HSC Mathematics Extension 1
Extension 1 rewards students who can hold a method together under time pressure. Classes spend their time on the working, because that is where the marks in this course are won and lost.

What the course covers
Further work with functions, including inverse functions and polynomials
Trigonometric equations and further identities
Further calculus, including related rates and volumes
Combinatorics and the binomial theorem
Proof by mathematical induction
Vectors in two dimensions
Statistical analysis, including the binomial distribution
How the week works
Classes run in small groups at the Epping rooms, with the tutor reading the working as it happens.
Homework each week comes out of what the lesson showed, so it targets the thing that went wrong.
The first class is a free trial. No card, no obligation, and you can stop there.

Questions parents ask
- Is Extension 1 worth keeping if the marks are low?
- That is a decision for the student, the school and the family, and it depends on the pattern of marks rather than one result. The tutor will tell you what they can see in the working, which is one input to it.
- Do you cover the Year 11 topics again in Year 12?
- Only where the Year 12 work needs them. A student who is shaky on Year 11 calculus gets that revisited as it comes up, rather than a second full pass.
- What happens in the free trial?
- Your child sits a real class with the group they would join. The tutor works through their current school task, watches the working, and tells you afterwards what they saw.
- How much does it cost?
- Fees are set by year group and are listed on this page. There is no enrolment fee and no lock-in term.
- Where are you?
