English
Beam teaches English, in small groups, with the same weekly shape as the other courses. What English does not have here is a diagnostic quiz, and the reason is written on this page rather than hidden.

Close reading of the set texts the school has chosen
Building an argument that answers the question that was asked
Writing under time pressure, and cutting what does not earn a mark
Creative and discursive writing for the relevant modules
Marking a student response against the criteria, then rewriting it
How the week works
Classes run in small groups at the Epping rooms, with the tutor reading the working as it happens.
Homework each week comes out of what the lesson showed, so it targets the thing that went wrong.
The first class is a free trial. No card, no obligation, and you can stop there.

There is no English diagnostic yet, and here is why
The diagnostic reports which specific skills a student has and has not got. It can do that where a course has been broken into skills a short question can test, which is done for maths and the sciences and is not done for English. Rather than run a quiz that would guess, the English answer comes from a tutor reading a piece of the student's own writing at the trial and telling you what they saw.
Questions parents ask
- Why is English missing from the diagnostic quiz?
- The quiz reports which specific skills a student has and has not got, and it can only do that where the course has been broken into skills that a multiple choice question can test. That work is done for maths and the sciences. It is not done for English, and a quiz that guessed would be worse than no quiz.
- So how do I find out where my child is?
- Book a trial class. The tutor reads a piece of their actual writing, marks it the way it would be marked, and tells you what they saw. That is the English version of the same answer, and it is done by a person.
- Which texts do you work on?
- The ones the school has set. Bring the booklist or the current task to the trial.
- What happens in the free trial?
- Your child sits a real class with the group they would join. The tutor works through their current school task, watches the working, and tells you afterwards what they saw.
- How much does it cost?
- Fees are set by year group and are listed on this page. There is no enrolment fee and no lock-in term.
- Where are you?
